Matt Damon along with other well known figures will be on the frontlines of the fight against hunger this Thursday, October 22. In partnership with the San Francisco Food Bank and Feeding America, these highly recognizable volunteers will be helping to distribute free groceries to Tenderloin residents at a weekly neighborhood food pantry hosted by Youth With a Mission.

FOOD BANK RESPONDS TO INCREASED NEED DURING RECESSION (pdf)

As more San Franciscans are affected by the recession and rising unemployment, the Food Bank is reaching out to those newly affected by hunger by adding four new pantries to specifically to serve those who may  be unaccustomed to navigating human services. 

The Food Bank's current outreach encourages people to dial 2-1-1 to find the pantry in their neighborhood. Thanks to Engine Company One for donating their creative services, including the television ad below:

SAN FRANCISCO FOOD BANK VOLUNTEER TO BE RECOGNIZED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA (pdf)

A unique program spearheaded by the San Francisco Food Bank, and the program’s creator, Gary Maxworthy, will be recognized by the newly formed White House Office of Social Innovation in Washington, D.C., today.  The “Farm to Family” program directly connects California food growers and packers to food banks, distributing fresh fruits and vegetables which aren’t considered marketable – due to shape, size, slight blemishes or overproduction – but are still delicious and healthy to eat. In the past, this surplus produce was ploughed under, fed to animals or dumped in landfills

 

5-YEAR OLD GIRL RAISES $3,736 TO FEED SAN FRANCISCO’S HUNGRY (pdf)

For her pre-school public service project, 5-year old Phoebe was determined to help feed some of the 150,000 San Franciscans who are unsure where their next meal is coming from. So she started collecting empty cans to turn in for the recycling money. She also created a hand-written plea for cash donations and distributed it to friends and family. In just a few weeks, Phoebe collected more than 4,497 cans and raised a total of $3,736.30.

Enjoy an evening out and lend a hand to the 150,000 San Franciscans at risk of going hungry this holiday season.

Maverick’s Scott Youkilis and Michael Pierce have created Dine Out Against Hunger and organized some of the city’s top venues to donate up to 10% of dinner sales on December 18th to the San Francisco Food Bank.

MACY'S 1 MILLION MEALS DONATION TO BENEFIT SAN FRANCISCO (pdf)

Macy’s is giving the ultimate gift this Thanksgiving season – 1 million meals to those at risk of hunger – in partnership with Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks. 

 

FINAL SLOW FOOD NATION VICTORY GARDEN HARVEST FOR SAN FRANCISCO FOOD BANK (pdf)

The San Francisco Food Bank will be collecting the final harvest from the Slow Food Nation Victory Garden on Thursday, November 20, at 11 a.m. in Civic Center Plaza. Continuing the environmentally friendly principles that guided the garden, the harvest will be transported from City Hall to the Food Bank warehouse in a hybrid van provided by FedEx Express.

 

SAN FRANCISCO FOOD BANK TO DISTRIBUTE 500,000TH FOOD BOX (pdf) November 19, 2008

 

The San Francisco Food Bank took over the Commodity Supplemental Food Box Program (CSFP) in June 2004 and since then the Food Bank has served almost 500,000 seniors through this program.  CSFP is a federal nutrition program designed to improve the health and nutrition of senior citizens, by providing them with monthly food boxes filled with nutritious food seniors need to stay healthy, like canned tuna, cereal, grains, peanut butter, cheese, dairy products, fruits and vegetables.

On Tuesday, November 18, members of the San Francisco 49ers team and 49ers staff will kick off the holiday giving season by volunteering in the warehouse at the San Francisco Food Bank. Volunteers will help pack monthly food boxes for low-income senior citizens.  The 49ers will be packing the 500,000th CSFP food box that the Food Bank will distribute on Thursday November 20th!

What’s it like for low-income people struggling to feed their families as food prices skyrocket? Area food bloggers recently found out first-hand, when they agreed to spend just $21 per person for their entire week’s food budget.

The San Francisco Food Bank created the Hunger Challenge, which invited participants to live on the same food budget as an average food stamp recipient - $1 per meal per person. Six Bay Area food bloggers and recipe developers took the Challenge, which ran from Sept. 21-27, sharing their trials, tribulations and recipes with readers.

COMMUNITY FOOD PROVIDERS TO BE HONORED AT CITY HALL (pdf)

250 neighborhood food pantry coordinators, staff and volunteers will be honored at City Hall tomorrow by city officials and the San Francisco Food Bank for their “frontline work” distributing more than 21 million pounds of food each year to San Franciscans in need of food assistance.

The special Pantry Appreciation Luncheon will feature a proclamation from Mayor Gavin Newsom honoring the hard work of people who operate the Food Bank’s neighborhood food pantries as well as awards for pantries that have gone above and beyond. 

 

440 SAN FRANCISCO SENIORS TO LOSE MONTHLY BOXES (pdf)

The San Francisco Food Bank is being forced to cut 440 seniors from the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), a federal food program designed to improve the health and nutrition of senior citizens. Participants receive a monthly box of U.S. Department of Agriculture commodities that is filled with food many seniors depend on: items like canned tuna or chicken, grains, milk, canned fruits and vegetables, juice and cheese. 

 

SAN FRANCISCO FOOD BANK TO RECEIVE SLOW FOOD NATION VICTORY GARDEN HARVEST (pdf)

The San Francisco Food Bank announced today that it will receive all the produce grown in the Slow Food Nation Victory Garden at City Hall in Civic Center Plaza. The newly planted garden will serve as a demonstration and education centerpiece leading up to and following Slow Food Nation’s Labor Day weekend event, providing visitors the opportunity to learn about urban food production. 

At harvest time, anticipated to be in late September, the produce will be distributed by the San Francisco Food Bank to its network of nearly 200 neighborhood pantries, which provide produce and other vital groceries free to the City’s hungry.

 

THE BAR ASSOCIATION OF SAN FRANCISCO RAISES MORE THAN $366,000 (pdf)
June 18, 2008

The Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF) and the San Francisco Food Bank (SFFB) will recognize 77 legal organizations and individuals who greatly contributed tothe 2008 Food from the Bar Campaign at an awards ceremony at One Market Restaurant in San Francisco Monday June 30. 

The campaign brought in a record setting amount in its 16th year - raising more than $366,000; 20,631 pounds of food; and participating attorneys and staff volunteered for more than 849 shifts! The biggest contributor this year was Platinum Partner Fremont Group, with 54,250 service points, that were awarded for funds and food donated as well as completed volunteer shifts.

Speaker Pelosi will tour the San Francisco Food Bank to speak with staff about hunger in San Francisco, actions the Food Bank is taking, the rising cost of food and the effect the current economic situation is having on low-income families and the Food Bank. Speaker Pelosi will also volunteer at the Food Bank and host a press conference regarding hunger and rising food prices.
