The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is our nation's first defense against hunger and the program most able to meet the increased demand in times of recession or disaster.
The recently passed House Budget proposal would change the structure of the program to a block grant, meaning that when people need help the most, they might get wait-listed or their benefit may be cut drastically.
Click here to ask your Member of Congress to protect SNAP- tell them not to balance the budget on the backs of millions of vulnerable Americans- including the 36,000 San Franciscans and Mariners enrolled in the program.
*SNAP is the new national name for food stamps, known in California as CalFresh.
The San Francisco Food Bank opposes the erosion of key social services and will continue to support nutrition programs. We work with the California Association of Food Banks, California Food Policy Advocates, and other anti-hunger partners throughout the state to make it easier for low-income Californians to recieve the CalFresh* benefits they are elligible for.
We continue to educate state officials on hunger and poverty in California to ensure that as we struggle through the tough economy, the state budget is not balanced on the backs of those most at risk of hunger.
*CalFresh is California's new name for the Food Stamp Program
Locally, we will continue partnering with the Food Security Task Force to:
- Develop solutions for low-income seniors who receive SSI (a form of Social Security income) and are thus ineligible to receive Food Stamps
- Conduct outreach to our clients who may be eilligble but not enrolled in CalFresh and other low-income benefits.
- Improve school meals and elevate the importance of student nutrition at City Hall
- Oppose local budget cuts to key social service programs.
